Student-Run Floorball Tournament by Committees
The class organizes and runs a one-lesson floorball tournament split into four committees: competition, refereeing, equipment and safety, and communications. The teacher only supervises; every student plays and also has an organizing role.
How to play
- Opening meeting: each committee gets its task sheet (competition builds the bracket and tracks results, refereeing assigns referees, equipment and safety sets up courts and checks sticks, communications keeps the scoreboard and writes a game report) (5 min).
- Equipment and safety sets up two 20 x 12 m courts and checks that no stick has a cracked blade or loose tape; competition posts the four-team bracket (5 min).
- Round of 6-minute games on both courts at once, refereed by teams not playing; competition and communications update results (13 min).
- Placement finals based on the bracket, refereed by those not playing (7 min).
- Wrap-up: communications reads the game report, each committee rates its work on a 1-to-4 target chart and the class suggests one improvement for the next tournament (5 min).
Rules
- The tournament uses the floorball rules agreed in class, with the stick below the waist and no body contact.
- The safety committee may stop any game if it sees broken gear or dangerous play.
- Student referees' calls are final during the game; complaints go in writing to the competition committee.
- Every team has at least one member on each committee.
Variations
Easier
A two-round tournament with no finals and roles assigned by the teacher.
Standard
A one-lesson tournament with four independent committees and placement finals.
Harder
A three-lesson league with standings by points and a fair play award voted on by opponents.
Adaptations
- Wheelchair user: may lead the competition committee and play on a court with a protected zone around the chair.
- Autism: gets one specific, steady task within the committee, with a step-by-step checklist.
- Temporary injury: serves on the refereeing or communications committee for the whole tournament.
Learning goals
- Plan and manage a sports event independently.
- Take on responsibilities within an organizing team.
- Resolve issues and complaints while respecting the agreed rules.

Teacher tip
Hand out committee roles the lesson before so students arrive with the bracket and courts planned. Your job is to observe and note evidence of leadership and cooperation, not to organize.
