Street Korfball 3v3 at One Post
A small-sided version of korfball in which two coed teams of three attack a single post placed in the middle of a small court. Because shots can come from any side, students work on getting open, passing without dribbling, and no-contact player-to-player defense.
How to play
- Courts about 40 x 40 ft with a korfball post in the center and a ring of cones 16 ft from the post (the clear line).
- Coed groups of three in pinnies; each defender guards one attacker, ideally of the same gender, for the whole possession.
- No dribbling or running with the ball: pass within 3 seconds; pivoting is allowed.
- After a steal or a basket, the attacking team must pass the ball outside the cone ring before it can shoot.
- Play 4-minute games; each basket is 1 point. Winners move up a court and losers move down (ladder league).
- Play 5 rounds; during each 30-second break the team decides who will be the outside passer.
Rules
- No shooting when the defender is in front, within arm's length, and has a hand up (defended shot).
- Zero contact: never take the ball out of someone's hands.
- Do not hang on the post or the basket.
- Nobody guards two players at once.
Variations
Easier
Allow one dribble before passing, and a defended shot counts if it comes after 3 passes.
Standard
3v3 with no dribbling, the clear line, and the defended-shot rule.
Harder
A basket off a pass from a teammate of the other gender counts double, and players have only 2 seconds to pass.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student plays as a set passer at the cone ring, and their team can inbound from their spot.
- Shyness: teams stay the same all class and the teacher suggests one simple give-and-go play.
- Lower skill: lower the basket on the post and use a lighter ball.
Learning goals
- Get open with changes of pace to receive the ball unguarded.
- Defend one-on-one without contact while respecting the defended-shot rule.
- Work together on a coed team where everyone takes part in the offense.
Equipment for a class of 25
- korfball posts: 4
- basketballs: 4
- pinnies: 25
- cones: 24
Teacher tip
Check that the posts are stable before starting and keep them away from walls. If you have no korfball posts, a hoop attached to a low basketball hoop works, but explain how it differs from the real basket.
