Sprint the Straights, Jog the Curves
A classic track interval workout adapted to the blacktop: students run fast on the long sides and jog the short sides, in sets with staggered starts. It improves anaerobic endurance and the ability to recover while still moving.
How to play
- Cone off the perimeter of the basketball court, about 85 m per lap, rounding the corners. Long sides = fast straights; short sides = jogging curves (2 min).
- Form three ability waves. Each wave starts 20 seconds after the one before, and all students run in the same direction (1 min).
- Practice lap: straights at 70% and curves at a jog to find the rhythm; remind students that fast does not mean an all-out sprint (2 min).
- Set: three laps in a row, about 90 seconds of work. Then 90 seconds of walking recovery on the inside while the teacher keeps time.
- Repeat for four sets (about 12 min). In set three, each student tries to gain one cone of distance on each straight compared with the previous set.
- Finish with 1 min of easy jogging and ask in which set they noticed they were no longer fully recovered.
Rules
- Everyone runs the same direction, and passing happens on the outside on the straights.
- On the curves you jog; you never walk or stop except during recovery between sets.
- Recovery is walking on the inside, not sitting down.
- Anyone who feels dizzy or in pain leaves the set and walks with the teacher.
Variations
Easier
Do only two laps per set and allow walking on the curves.
Standard
Four sets of three laps with 90 seconds of recovery.
Harder
Cut recovery to 60 seconds or add a fifth set with straights at 85%.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a student in a wheelchair pushes fast on the straights and easy on the curves around a smaller inner rectangle.
- Students with autism: preview the number of sets and laps on a card and let them cross off each one.
- Low fitness level: allow straights at 60–70% and placement in the slowest wave.
Learning goals
- Alternate hard efforts with active recovery without stopping.
- Recognize how fatigue builds across sets.
- Maintain efficient running form on the fast straights.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 12
- stopwatch: 1
Teacher tip
Round the corners generously with cones to avoid sharp turns and slips. Ability waves keep faster runners from constantly passing everyone else.
