Sport-Stance Starts: Win the First Step
In stations, students practice quick starts from four sport stances: basketball defense, team handball goalie, tennis return and base runner. At each station they work on the most efficient first step, lateral, crossover or straight ahead, in response to a signal.
How to play
- Set up 4 stations, each with a cone 5 yards to either side of a center line, and make 4 groups of 6 or 7 (2 min).
- Station 1, basketball defense: low stance with arms out; on the signal, shuffle without crossing feet to the called cone.
- Station 2, team handball goalie: standing tall with arms up; on the signal, take a long side step and a controlled lunge toward the cone without diving.
- Station 3, tennis return: split-step when the partner mimics a serve and, on landing, push off to the side they point to. Station 4, base runner: sideways stance, crossover step and a 5-yard sprint.
- At each station, one student signals by raising a pinny left or right and the others take turns; everyone does 6 starts. Rotate every 3 minutes (12 min).
- Debrief: compare which first step felt fastest and which sport uses each one (2 min).
Rules
- Hold the stance until the signal; jumping early means a redo.
- Goalies don't dive to the ground; the step is long but controlled.
- Safety: stations stay 5 yards apart and everyone walks back to the end of the line.
- The signaler changes sides at random.
Variations
Easier
Use only two stations and announce the signal by voice.
Standard
Four stations with a random visual signal.
Harder
Double signal: the pinny shows the side, and a clap means switch to the other side after two steps.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: ready position in the wheelchair and first push toward the signaled side.
- Visual impairment: signal by voice or with a sound on each side.
- Lower level: starts at 60% and skip the final sprint at station 4.
Learning goals
- Get into ready stances specific to several sports.
- Choose and perform the most efficient first step for each situation.
- Connect agility to the demands of different sports.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 16
- pinnies: 4
Teacher tip
Demonstrate each stance with a student model before rotating. The crossover step often turns into a full spin, so cue students to turn the chest toward the cone only after the first step lands.
