Spell Your Name Workout
Each letter of the alphabet matches a strength or cardio exercise with a set number of reps. Students spell their own name, a partner's name and a health word by doing each exercise. It builds overall fitness in a varied and motivating way.
How to play
- Post the alphabet signs on the wall: each letter with an exercise and reps (for example, A = 20 jumping jacks, B = 10 squats, C = 15-second plank). Explain the list (2 min).
- Each student, on their yoga mat, spells their first name by doing the exercise for each letter in order (5 min).
- Students who finish early also spell their last name until the teacher signals.
- In pairs, each partner spells the other's name and they do it together, counting out loud (5 min).
- Group finish: the class chooses a health-related word (for example, HEART) and spells the whole word in sync, led by a volunteer (3 min).
Rules
- Complete each exercise with good form before moving to the next letter.
- If a letter repeats, the exercise repeats.
- Each student works on their own mat, spaced from others.
- You can always choose the easy version listed on the sign.
Variations
Easier
Cut the reps in half and spell only the first name.
Standard
First name, partner's name and a group word.
Harder
Spell first and last name and add a jogging lap between words.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: prepare an alternative alphabet with seated or upper-body exercises.
- Visual impairment: a partner reads the letter and exercise aloud, or provide a large-print list.
- Low fitness level: each sign includes an easier version of every exercise.
Learning goals
- Complete a varied strength and cardio workout independently.
- Perform basic bodyweight exercises correctly.
- Work with the class on a shared challenge.
Equipment for a class of 25
- letter signs: 4
- yoga mats: 25
Teacher tip
Balance the alphabet so common letters (A, E, R, S) aren't always the hardest. Laminate the signs for future lessons and let students suggest changes.
