Softball Pepper Line Drill
A classic baseball drill: one batter uses a short, easy half swing to tap pitches from a line of fielders standing a few yards away, who field and pitch again without stopping. Students practice bat control, quick hands, and keeping a group rhythm.
How to play
- Form 5 groups of 5: one batter and four fielders standing shoulder to shoulder in a line 23 ft from the batter, marked with cones (2 min).
- A fielder tosses gently underhand; the batter takes a short half swing to send the ball back on the ground or one hop to anyone in the line.
- Whoever fields the ball immediately tosses it back to the batter; the group tries to string together as many hits in a row as possible.
- Rotation: a fielder who bobbles the ball moves to the right end of the line; if the batter misses twice or pops one up, they swap with the first fielder.
- Every 3 minutes, the teacher signals and the batter rotates no matter what so everyone bats (12 min).
- At the end, each group counts its best streak and shares a tip for keeping it going (1 min).
Rules
- Safety: the batter never takes a full swing, only a controlled half swing.
- Hit the ball down, never above the waist.
- Groups stand side by side at least 25 ft apart.
Variations
Easier
The line moves in to 16 ft and balls may come back on a bounce.
Standard
Line at 23 ft, half swing, and an immediate toss after each catch.
Harder
The batter must hit to each fielder in order down the line.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student stands at one end of the line with a smaller fielding area, or bats seated.
- Hearing impairment: the tosser raises the ball before tossing as a signal.
- Skill level: students who struggle can bat with a wide paddle.
Learning goals
- Control the bat to direct short hits.
- Field and toss quickly in a continuous sequence.
- Keep the group rhythm and cooperate to extend the streak.
Equipment for a class of 25
- soft bats: 5
- soft balls: 10
- cones: 10
Teacher tip
The common mistake is trying to hit hard; remind students the goal is the streak, not distance. It works best near the end of a batting unit, once students have the swing down.
