Shadow Dance: Grow, Shrink and Merge
Groups of four create a short routine behind a lit sheet by playing with the distance to the light: close to it the shadow grows, far from it the shadow shrinks, and bodies pressed together merge into one shape. Students work on body expression, spatial awareness and group composition.
How to play
- Hang the sheet tight between two posts or wall bars, place the light about 10 feet behind it and darken the room; the audience sits in front (3 min).
- Taking turns, each group explores the three effects for one minute: move toward the light to grow, press close to the sheet to shrink and line up in profile to merge into one shape (5 min).
- Each group picks a simple idea, such as a seed that grows, a monster that splits or a wave, and tells it in three moments set to music (4 min).
- Groups rehearse a routine of about 45 seconds using all three effects, with side entrances and exits so shadows appear and disappear (7 min).
- Each group performs behind the sheet, and the audience shares what they saw and which effect surprised them most (6 min).
Rules
- Nobody touches the light or walks behind it; the area between light and sheet is marked with cones.
- Move slowly in the dark and never run.
- Group shapes do not include lifts or climbing on classmates.
Variations
Easier
Work only on growing and shrinking, with a single character per group.
Standard
Combine all three effects in a 45-second routine with music.
Harder
Add PE equipment such as hoops or poles that turn into other objects in shadow.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a wheelchair makes very expressive shadows; the student moves toward or away from the light with help if needed.
- Visual impairment: a partner quietly describes what is happening on the sheet, and the student joins the merged contact shapes.
- Autism or fear of the dark: keep a dim light on and preview when the lights will go off and on.
Learning goals
- Communicate an idea with the body using shadow as a means of expression.
- Control distance and levels to change the size of a shadow.
- Compose a short group sequence with a beginning, middle and end.
Equipment for a class of 25
- white sheet: 1
- spotlight: 1
- music: 1
Teacher tip
A projector or bright lamp works as the light; tape down the cord so no one trips. Waiting groups can rehearse their shapes silently while another group performs.
