Scooter Board Hockey
A floor hockey game in which every student plays seated on a scooter board, moving with their feet and handling the stick with one hand. Students practice coordinating movement and stickhandling, leg strength, and safe play in an alternative sport.
How to play
- In the gym, set up two 60 × 40 ft fields with a small goal at each end. Make 6 teams of 4 in pinnies; the extra student referees and rotates (2 min).
- Practice (4 min): seated on a scooter, each student pushes with the feet and dribbles the ball with the stick in one hand to a cone and back.
- On each field, two teams play 4-on-4 while the third waits on the sideline passing with sticks in pairs, off the scooters.
- Games last 3 minutes; the waiting team comes in for the team that gave up more goals (or the one that has played longest if tied). Goal = 1 point (14 min).
- Wrap-up (2 min): put scooters away upside down and talk about how students managed to move and dribble at the same time.
Rules
- Always sit or kneel on the scooter; never stand or lie on your stomach.
- Hands stay off the wheels: one holds the stick and the other holds the handle or edge of the scooter.
- No ramming another scooter on purpose and no pushing opponents.
- Safety: the stick never goes above the knee.
Variations
Easier
Use a large foam ball instead of the floorball ball and no sticks, striking with the hand.
Standard
Seated 4-on-4, stick in one hand, and small goals.
Harder
Each team has a goalie on a scooter inside a 6-foot crease that others may not enter.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: plays in their wheelchair with a short stick, and everyone keeps 3 feet of space when contesting the ball.
- Autism: start with the waiting team to watch the game and come in when ready.
- Lower fitness: may also push with one hand instead of only the feet.
Learning goals
- Coordinate scooter movement with stickhandling.
- Shoot the ball at the goal from a seated position.
- Follow safety rules in a game with rolling equipment.
Equipment for a class of 25
- scooter boards: 16
- floorball sticks: 25
- floorball balls: 4
- small goals: 4
- pinnies in three colors: 24
Teacher tip
Check beforehand that all wheels spin freely, and keep reminding students about fingers: pinched fingers are the most common scooter injury. If you're short on scooters, use a single field and lengthen the waiting team's rotation.
