School Pentathlon (Track & Field)
A school pentathlon with five track and field events (sprint, long jump, throw, vertical jump and distance run) in one class period with combined scoring. Students develop several fitness components and learn how combined events work.
How to play
- Set up four stations with cones and a score sheet per group; make 4 groups of 6 and confirm everyone has already warmed up (2 min).
- Sprint: timed 60 meters (about 65 yards), two runners at a time; one partner times and another records.
- Long jump with a short 8–10-step approach into a sand pit or onto mats; measure the better of two jumps.
- Modified shot put: push a 2–3 kg (4–6 lb) medicine ball from the shoulder with feet behind the line; better of two attempts.
- Vertical jump against the wall: mark with chalked fingers standing and at the top of the jump, then measure the difference; groups rotate through the four stations every 5 minutes.
- Finish with a 600-meter run at your own pace all together (4 min), then convert results to points with a simple table and add up the total (4 min).
Rules
- Complete a full warm-up before the first event.
- Nobody crosses the throwing area or landing zone while someone is performing.
- Wait your turn behind the starting cone.
- Everyone competes against their own results; the table gives everyone points.
Variations
Easier
Three events (sprint, long jump and throw) with one measured attempt.
Standard
Five events with a points table and a final total.
Harder
Five events with two attempts and a comparison with combined-event scoring such as the heptathlon or decathlon.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: adapted seated events (medicine ball throw, short wheelchair sprint).
- Injuries: swap the event for one that uses a similar skill, or serve as an official.
- Lower fitness or asthma: alternate running and walking in the 600 meters.
Learning goals
- Learn about combined events in track and field.
- Develop speed, explosive power and endurance.
- Record and evaluate personal results.
Equipment for a class of 25
- stopwatches: 4
- cones: 16
- medicine balls (2–3 kg / 4–6 lb): 3
- tape measures: 2
- chalk: 4
- mats or sand pit: 2
Teacher tip
Put the throwing station at one end with an empty landing zone and stay there yourself; groups can run the other stations with their score sheets.

Accuracy Circuit with Cloth Targets
Accuracy stations with cloth targets on the floor and on the wall, where students toss bean bags and score points by ring. They work on throwing accuracy and matching force to distance.
Acrosport in Groups of 4
Partner and group stunts (acrosport) in groups of 4: building simple human pyramids and balances with bases, flyers and spotters while following safety rules. Students develop strength, balance, cooperation and creativity by linking poses together.
Adapted 6v6 Volleyball
6v6 volleyball with adapted rules so the ball stays in play longer and the whole team takes part: catching is allowed on the first contact and serves come from closer in. Students practice the set, the forearm pass (bump), the serve and rotation.
Adapted Beach Handball
An adapted beach handball game with a soft ball: no dribbling, three steps with the ball, and double points for spectacular goals such as jump or spin shots. It develops throwing, passing and team play in a fun, safe way.
Adapted Beach Volleyball 2v2
Modified 2v2 beach volleyball with a foam ball and portable net on small courts. Students work on the set and forearm pass, communication with a partner and cooperation to build a rally.
Adapted School Triathlon
An adapted school triathlon that links a run, jump rope and a skills circuit, with transitions in a marked zone. Students build endurance, manage their pace and practice switching quickly between tasks.
