Scarf Juggling Circle Pass on the Beat
After reviewing the scarf cascade, students form circles of six and pass a scarf to the person on their right on a shared beat, turning it into a group juggle. Students work on hand-eye coordination, focus, and keeping in sync with the group.
How to play
- Each student takes three scarves. Solo review: two-scarf cascade and then three, tossing across the body and catching with a downward claw (3 min).
- Make circles of 6, one step apart. Each student holds two scarves while the group chants the beat: toss, toss, pass (2 min).
- On toss, toss each student makes two tosses of their own; on pass they toss one scarf to the person on their right and catch the one coming from the left (4 min).
- On the whistle, switch the passing direction. The group counts how many rounds in a row they complete with no scarf dropped (3 min).
- Final challenge: with three scarves each, the circle chases its record number of rounds in 2 minutes (3 min).
Rules
- Pass the scarf gently, at your partner's face height.
- If a scarf drops, the student who picks it up says ready and the group restarts the chant.
- Stay one step apart so arms do not collide.
- Never bend down to pick up a scarf while someone is passing toward you.
Variations
Easier
Each student has one scarf and the beat is toss, pass.
Standard
Two scarves per student with the beat toss, toss, pass.
Harder
Three scarves per student, behind-the-back passes, or cross passes to the person opposite.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student joins the circle seated, with classmates moving closer so passes arrive at hand height.
- Autism: preview each direction change with a card and keep the same chanted beat throughout.
- Skill level: students who struggle use one fewer scarf than the rest of the circle.
Learning goals
- Toss and catch scarves on a steady beat.
- Synchronize their own actions with the group.
- Stay focused on a shared task.
Equipment for a class of 25
- handkerchiefs: 75
Teacher tip
Scarves fall slowly and give time to correct: stress catching from above, like grabbing a fly. Clapping the beat at the start helps every circle.
