Safe Layout: A Diving Catch Progression on Mats
A careful progression for learning the layout, Ultimate's diving catch, and above all how to land well: from the floor, from the knees and from a light jog, always on mats. Students work on cushioning technique and the judgment to know when diving is not worth it.
How to play
- Explain the landing: arms out front, body extended, first contact with forearms and chest, never the elbow or shoulder (3 min).
- In pairs, lying face down, reach out for a disc the partner drops in front (3 min).
- Kneeling on the mat, fall forward and to the side catching a disc passed at chest height (6 min).
- From two very light jogging steps, a low dive onto two joined mats to catch a short pass (8 min).
- Closing discussion: in which game situations would diving be reckless, and why? (5 min).
Rules
- Always on joined mats with no gaps; never on a hard floor.
- Only one person per mat, and the next waits until the previous one is up.
- Diving near another person is not allowed: in a game, a layout only happens in open space.
- Anyone with a shoulder or wrist injury skips the falling phases.
Variations
Easier
Work only the floor and kneeling phases.
Standard
Full progression up to the dive with two jogging steps.
Harder
Dive to the non-dominant side, always from a light jog.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: practices reaching for the disc from a seated position and analyzes classmates' technique.
- Overweight: does only the kneeling falls, with an extra mat.
- Fear of falling: can stay at the kneeling phase and move on only when they feel confident.
Learning goals
- Learn to land safely on a diving catch.
- Perform a basic layout technique under controlled conditions.
- Weigh the risk and decide when an action is worth it in a game.
Equipment for a class of 25
- mats: 8
- soft discs: 8
- cones: 8
Teacher tip
Do not chase spectacular dives: the goal is for students to land well. It works best in the gym with crash mats or 2-inch mats.
