Rookie Ref: Zero-Complaint Team Handball
A team handball game run by rookie student referees who secretly make a few planned mistakes agreed with the teacher. Any complaint is penalized, and at the end the mistakes are revealed to discuss respect for officials and accepting their calls.
How to play
- Make 4 teams of 5 for two courts and choose 2 rookie refs; quietly ask them to make 2 or 3 doubtful calls on purpose (3 min).
- Explain the rule: any complaint, gesture or eye roll means a turnover and a 7 m (23 ft) throw for the other team.
- Only the captain may ask, at a stoppage and calmly, 'Can you explain the call?'.
- Play 2x6 minutes; the 3 remaining students tally complaints and respectful gestures.
- Reveal the planned mistakes and discuss: how did it feel, who stayed calm and what helps a referee (4 min)?
- Switch refs and play 6 more minutes with no planned mistakes, comparing complaint counts.
Rules
- The referee always has the final word.
- Teams applaud the referee after every game.
- Nobody discusses a call until the final debrief.
- Safety: no grabbing or pushing a player who is in the air.
Variations
Easier
No penalty for complaints; they are only counted.
Standard
Planned mistakes, penalized complaints and a final debrief.
Harder
A team with zero complaints gets 3 bonus goals.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: scorer's table official with cards, or play with a personal shooting spot.
- Autism: tell the student beforehand that some calls will be wrong on purpose to prevent anxiety.
- Highly skilled players: may only shoot with their non-dominant hand.
Learning goals
- Respect officials' calls even when they seem unfair.
- Control angry reactions to someone else's mistake.
- Understand how hard refereeing is.
Equipment for a class of 25
- team handballs: 2
- goals: 4
- pinnies: 10
- whistles: 4
Teacher tip
Choose confident students as refs so the planned mistakes don't affect them. In the debrief, stress that these are normal mistakes in real sports.
