Pesäpallo: Finnish Baseball for School
A school version of Finland's national sport: the pitcher tosses the ball straight up next to the batter, who hits it and runs bases set in a zigzag. Students practice hitting a dropping ball, running with changes of direction, and reading the game.
How to play
- Mark home plate and three zigzag bases: 1st 50 ft to the left, 2nd 65 ft to the right, and 3rd 50 ft to the left and deeper. Split into two teams of 12-13 (3 min).
- The fielding pitcher faces the batter at home and tosses the ball straight up, 3 ft above the batter's head, so it drops onto the plate.
- The batter gets three pitches and may run after any fair hit, setting the bat on the ground first.
- Runners may stop at any base; a runner is out if a fielder holding the ball steps on their next base before they get there.
- On a caught fly ball, the batter and any moving runners are 'wounded': not out, but sent back to the batting line without advancing.
- Each runner reaching home scores 1 run. The inning ends after 3 outs or when the whole team has batted; play 2 innings each (22 min).
Rules
- Safety: only the pitcher and batter stand at home; the line waits behind a cone 15 ft back.
- A toss that doesn't go straight up is retaken.
- Set the bat down; never throw it.
Variations
Easier
Batters toss to themselves and the bases move in to 40 ft.
Standard
Vertical toss, zigzag bases at 50-65 ft, and three pitches.
Harder
Only two pitches per batter, and 3rd base moves back to 80 ft.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student hits off a tall cone and a teammate runs for them.
- Hearing impairment: the pitcher raises a hand before tossing, and outs are signaled with an arm.
- Skill level: students who struggle can toss the ball to themselves.
Learning goals
- Hit a vertically dropping ball with a bat.
- Decide when to advance on a zigzag base path.
- Learn a bat-and-ball sport from another culture and compare it with baseball.
Equipment for a class of 25
- soft bats: 2
- tennis balls: 4
- cones: 10
- bases: 4
Teacher tip
Give pitchers 3 minutes to practice the vertical toss in pairs. On the zigzag, have runners slow down before each base to avoid rolled ankles.
