Partner Form Shooting: From the Rim to the Line
A shooting progression where partners work on form with four cues: balance, eyes, elbow, and follow-through (BEEF). Students start one yard from the rim and only move back after making shots, while the partner watches and fills in a simple checklist.
How to play
- Give each pair a checklist with the four cues: feet shoulder-width apart, eyes on the rim, elbow under the ball, and wrist snapping down at the end. Demonstrate (2 min).
- One-hand shots from one yard, guide hand off the ball: 5 shots, then switch. The partner returns the ball with a bounce pass (3 min).
- Three spots: one yard, two steps, and a short free throw. Make 3 of 5 to move back; otherwise repeat (4 min).
- During each set, the observer checks off the cues the shooter shows and gives one correction (4 min).
- Finish: 10 shots per pair from the free-throw line, compared with their first attempt of the day (2 min).
Rules
- Only move back after making 3 of 5; form matters more than distance.
- Give your partner just one correction, specific and positive.
- Safety: each pair shoots on its own side of the basket, and nobody chases a ball into another pair's area.
Variations
Easier
Shoot only from one yard and two steps, with a size 5 ball or a lower hoop.
Standard
Three distances, moving back after 3 of 5, with the checklist.
Harder
Add a catch off a pass before the shot and make the final spot the top of the key.
Adaptations
- Students who use wheelchairs: shoot from the chair at the same spots, shortened if needed, and use the checklist like everyone else.
- Students with autism: provide a checklist with a picture for each cue and keep the same partner and basket all period.
- Students who already shoot well go straight to the free-throw line and work on a small jump shot.
Learning goals
- Apply the basic cues of one-hand shooting form.
- Adjust shooting distance based on their own success rate.
- Give and receive specific feedback respectfully.

Teacher tip
Many students push with two hands or shoot from the chest; moving back to one yard and shooting with only the shooting hand fixes it fast. Praise good form even when the shot misses.
