Paralympic Knowledge Relay
A team relay where each runner picks up a card with a question about Paralympic sport, and the team decides the answer before carrying it to a cone. It blends running, teamwork and knowledge.
How to play
- Make 5 teams of 5 in pinnies, in lines. Fifty feet out, each team has a hoop with 10 face-down cards with three answers (A, B, C) and the answer covered on the back. Halfway, 3 colored cones, one per answer (3 min).
- The first runner grabs a card and returns; the team reads it quietly and decides within 20 seconds.
- The next runner drops the card under the chosen cone, continues to the hoop for another and runs back with it.
- Samples: How many goalball players per team are on the court? (3). Who crosses the line first in guided running? (the athlete). Which Paralympic sport isn't Olympic? (boccia).
- After all cards or 10 minutes, uncover the answers: 2 points per correct one and 1 bonus for the first team done (15 min so far).
Rules
- Only one runner per team at a time, always in your own lane.
- Read the card in line, not at the hoop.
- Slow down before the cone; nobody dives to drop a card.
Variations
Easier
True-or-false questions with two cones and the hoop at 33 ft.
Standard
Ten three-choice questions, hoop at 50 ft and cones halfway.
Harder
Open questions answered to the teacher in one sentence.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: permanent card reader or a half-length run.
- Visual or reading difficulties: large print read aloud by a teammate.
- Fitness level: speed walking instead of running on hot days.
Learning goals
- Learn Paralympic rules, athletes and events.
- Cooperate to decide quickly under time pressure.
- Use respectful vocabulary about disability.
