Paddle Wall Ball Rotation Line
A wall ball game in groups of 5 where each student hits the ball against the wall once and runs to the back of the line, like a squash rotation drill. Students work on hitting after a bounce, positioning, and reaction, with no one sitting out.
How to play
- Groups of 5 facing a 6 m (20 ft) section of wall. Use chalk to mark a line on the wall 1 m (3 ft) up and a back line on the ground 8 m (25 ft) out.
- The first player serves above the wall line; the ball must come back and bounce once inside the court.
- The next player in line hits it after one bounce, and every player runs to the back of the line along the side after their shot.
- A player who misses (under the line, out, or two bounces) gets a letter of P-A-D-D-L-E but keeps playing; after spelling the word, they do 5 squats and start over.
- Rounds last 3 minutes; between rounds, groups switch wall sections (4 rounds, 12 min). At the end, each group shares its longest rally (3 min).
Rules
- After hitting, always exit along the side, never through the middle.
- Wait behind the back line until it is your turn.
- If two players go for the same ball, stop and replay.
- Wall sections are at least 3 m (10 ft) apart.
Variations
Easier
Allow two bounces and use a soft ball.
Standard
One bounce, a 1 m (3 ft) line, and lines of 5.
Harder
Players must alternate forehand and backhand by turn or they get a letter.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student plays from a fixed spot without running; their turn comes when the paddle is handed over.
- Visual impairment: use a brightly colored ball and a plain, light-colored wall.
- Shyness: let students choose groups and do not call letters out loud.
Learning goals
- Hit the ball after a bounce, aiming at the wall.
- Move out of the way for the next player.
- Accept mistakes and keep playing without elimination.
Equipment for a class of 25
- paddles: 25
- tennis balls: 10
- chalk: 5
Teacher tip
The usual jam is the hitter standing still and blocking the next player; chalk an exit path. Choose wall sections without windows or doors.
