Lose It, Touch Your Line: Transition Game
A 4-on-4 floor hockey game in which the player who loses the ball must touch their own end line before defending again. Every turnover creates an outnumbered counterattack, so students practice quick transitions to offense and getting back to protect the goal.
How to play
- Set up two 90 x 50 ft fields with small goals and no goalies, plus a 6 ft crease marked with cones. Make 4 teams of 6 or 7; play 4 on 4 while the rest rotate in every 2 minutes (3 min).
- Key rule: the player who loses the ball on a bad pass, a steal, or a missed shot must run and touch their own end line with the stick before rejoining play.
- The team that wins the ball attacks right away 4 on 3 and keeps that advantage until the player who lost it gets back.
- A goal within 5 seconds of winning the ball is worth 2 points; any other goal is worth 1. Play 3 periods of 4 minutes and switch opponents (14 min).
- Wrap-up for 3 minutes: what did the three defenders do while their teammate got back? Which pass made the most of the advantage?
Rules
- The stick never goes above the waist, and nobody hits an opponent's stick or legs.
- Nobody enters the 6 ft crease or stands still in front of the goal.
- Safety: the player running to the end line goes along the sideline, away from play, with the stick low.
Variations
Easier
The player who loses the ball only touches the midline instead of the end line.
Standard
Four on four with an end-line touch and double points for quick goals.
Harder
If the team with the advantage does not score within 8 seconds, the advantage ends and it must keep possession.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a student in a wheelchair uses a short stick and, after a turnover, only touches a nearby cone on the sideline.
- Autism: explain the rule with a drawing and walk through two turnovers in slow motion first.
- Fitness level: the student may touch the line at a fast walk and play shorter shifts.
Learning goals
- Attack quickly to take advantage of an extra player after a steal.
- Get back and close the middle to protect the goal while outnumbered.
- React quickly to a change of possession.
Equipment for a class of 25
- floor hockey sticks: 10
- floor hockey balls: 2
- small goals: 4
- pinnies: 13
- cones: 16
Teacher tip
Outnumbered defenders often all rush out; teach them to drop back and close the middle until their teammate returns. Check that everyone holds the stick with both hands.
