Lip Sync Showdown: Song, Character and Choreography
Groups of five prepare a one-minute lip sync to a current song: they split up the lines, create characters, sync their mouths to the lyrics and add simple choreography. Students work on body and facial expression, rhythm and group organization.
How to play
- Make groups of 5 and let each one pick a one-minute section from a list of songs the teacher has screened (3 min).
- Each group divides the lyrics among its members and decides who sings lead, who does backup and when everyone sings (5 min).
- Groups rehearse syncing their lips to the music, exaggerating face and hand gestures so they read from far away (6 min).
- They add choreography of at least two 8-count blocks for the chorus plus a starting and ending formation (8 min).
- Each group performs for the class with the music, and the audience scores it on a three-part rubric: sync, expression and choreography (8 min).
Rules
- Every group member gets at least one line or spotlight moment.
- Lyrics must be school-appropriate; the teacher has the final say on the song.
- The audience applauds and never interrupts a performance.
- Costumes and props from the classroom are allowed, but nothing that could hurt anyone.
Variations
Easier
Lip sync only the chorus, about 30 seconds, with no choreography blocks.
Standard
Prepare a one-minute lip sync with assigned lines and two choreography blocks.
Harder
Add a character with a backstory and a scene change halfway through the song.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student can be the seated lead in the center with the choreography built around them.
- Hearing impairment: choose a section with printed lyrics and have a partner cue each entry with a gesture.
- Shyness: the student can sing backup or lead the group's choreography instead of solo lines.
Learning goals
- Use gestures, eye contact and facial expression to communicate what a song is about.
- Sync movements and gestures with the rhythm and lyrics.
- Organize as a group by sharing tasks and the spotlight.
Equipment for a class of 25
- music: 1
- speakers: 1
Teacher tip
Collect song requests a week ahead and screen the lyrics. Syncing improves a lot when each group has printed lyrics color-coded by person.
