Lightning 4-on-4 Volleyball Court League
A quick 4-on-4 tournament with timed games on three courts: winners move up a court and losers move down, with students keeping time and score. Students apply small-sided game play, fair play, and run the tournament themselves.
How to play
- Make six teams of 4 in pinnies, plus one student as the timekeeper and scorekeeper. Set up three short courts, 20 x 40 feet, numbered 1 to 3 (4 min).
- Games last 5 minutes, with underhand or overhand serves and up to three touches; if tied at the whistle, the next point wins.
- When the whistle blows, winners move up a court and losers move down; the winner on court 1 stays, and so does the loser on court 3.
- Teams rotate positions every time they win back the serve, and they alternate who serves first each game.
- Play four rounds (22 min including changes) and finish by counting how many times each team played on court 1 (2 min).
Rules
- On each court, teams call their own points and the captains decide close calls.
- Every player must serve at least once per game.
- Walk around the outside when changing courts so you do not cut through live games.
Variations
Easier
Allow one bounce per side and use 16 x 33 foot courts.
Standard
5-minute 4-on-4 games with up-and-down court movement.
Harder
Overhand serves only, with a bonus point for winning a rally on a three-touch attack.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: serve as scorekeeper and play the front row on a team with a slightly narrower court.
- Hearing impairment: signal each round change visually as well as with the whistle.
- Developing players: the teacher forms balanced mixed teams.
Learning goals
- Apply volleyball fundamentals in small-sided games.
- Manage results through self-officiating and fair play.
- Organize team rotation independently.
Equipment for a class of 25
- volleyballs: 4
- net: 3
- pinnies: 24

Teacher tip
Draw the court chart on the whiteboard ahead of time so nobody gets lost. If there are extra students, rotate them in as scorekeepers between rounds so everyone plays.
