Leaky Bucket Team Relay
A water game for hot days: each team must move water from one bucket to another using a cup full of holes that students plug with their fingers. Students work on cooperation, organizing a relay and finding solutions.
How to play
- Make 5 teams of 5. Each team has a full bucket at the start and an empty one 12 yards away with a masking tape line halfway up (2 min).
- Give each team a plastic cup with 6 to 8 small holes. Holes may only be plugged with fingers (1 min).
- Round 1, 5 minutes: individual relay; each student fills the cup, walks to the other bucket, empties it and brings the cup back.
- Two-minute break: the team looks for a better way, such as a human chain or two students plugging the cup at once.
- Round 2, 5 minutes with the new strategy; each team that passes the tape line earns a point (5 minutes of play and 2 to check levels).
- Wrap-up: each team explains its solution, then everyone puts equipment away (3 min).
Rules
- Only fingers may plug the holes; no tape or clothing.
- Buckets stay in place.
- The whole team helps carry water.
- Safety: play on dirt or grass and walk briskly on wet areas.
Variations
Easier
The cup has only 3 holes and the distance is 8 yards.
Standard
A cup with 6 to 8 holes and a 12-yard distance.
Harder
The cup can't be passed hand to hand above waist height.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student stays at a fixed spot in the human chain to receive and pass.
- Sensory sensitivity: the student can handle logistics, refilling the starting bucket or measuring levels.
- Lower fitness: shorten the student's leg of the relay.
Learning goals
- Cooperate to organize an efficient relay.
- Test and evaluate alternative solutions to a problem.
- Enjoy summer activity while being careful with water.
Equipment for a class of 25
- buckets: 10
- plastic cups: 6
- masking tape: 1
- cones: 10
Teacher tip
Save this for hot days and tell students ahead of time to bring a change of clothes. Afterward, reuse the water on the school's plants.
