Lead Leg in Slow Motion: Hurdles on Tablet
In groups of three, students film themselves clearing three low foam hurdles and review their lead leg and trail leg in slow motion using a checklist. Each student spots one error and fixes it in the next block of runs.
How to play
- Present the checklist: knee leads the attack, trail foot turned out, trunk leaning forward and opposite arm reaching (3 min).
- Set up six lanes with three foam hurdles 6 to 7 m apart and four steps between hurdles; each group picks the spacing that feels comfortable (3 min).
- Block one: each runner does three runs; the filmer shoots from the side and the observer fills in the checklist (7 min).
- Slow-motion review: the group names one strength and one main error for each runner (5 min).
- Block two: three runs focused on fixing the error, filmed again for comparison (7 min).
Rules
- Use only foam hurdles or hurdles that tip over on contact.
- Nobody starts until the previous runner has cleared the last hurdle.
- The filmer stands 10 feet to the side of the lane.
- Film only with permission and delete the videos at the end.
Variations
Easier
Clear hurdles at the lowest height or poles on cones, with five steps between them.
Standard
Three low foam hurdles with video review and a second correction block.
Harder
Shorten the spacing to run a three-step rhythm and also analyze the landing.
Adaptations
- Visual impairment: replaces hurdles with raised lines and gets verbal and hands-on feedback.
- Overweight: clears hurdles at the lowest height and may alternate with poles on the ground.
- Autism: starts as the filmer to watch the model several times before running.
Learning goals
- Improve lead leg and trail leg action in hurdling.
- Use video as a tool for technical self-assessment.
- Give and receive precise feedback in a small group.
Equipment for a class of 25
- foam hurdles: 18
- tablets or phones: 9
- cones: 12
Teacher tip
Have a model video of a hurdler ready for comparison. With beginners, start with the shortest spacing: it's easier to lengthen than to shorten.
