Lapta: Russian Bat-and-Run Game
A traditional Russian bat game: the batter hits the ball and runs from the 'city' to the 'home' line and back while fielders try to tag them with a soft ball. Students practice batting, dodging, and reacting when the teams suddenly switch roles.
How to play
- Mark a 65 x 100 ft field: at one end the 'city', a 10 ft strip, and at the other the 'home' line. One team of 12-13 starts in the city, the other in the field (3 min).
- A teammate tosses the ball up next to the batter, who hits it with the soft bat; batters get two tries.
- After a hit, the batter drops the bat and runs to the home line. They can stay safe there and run back to the city on a teammate's hit.
- Fielders pass the ball without taking more than one step and throw below the waist to tag any runner outside a safe zone.
- On a tag or a caught fly, roles switch instantly: fielders sprint to the city, and the batting team can tag them before they get there to cancel the switch.
- Each round trip scores 1 point. Play two 10-minute halves (20 min).
Rules
- Safety: tags count only below the waist and only with the soft ball.
- The player with the ball may not take more than one step.
- Batters take turns; nobody bats again until everyone has batted.
Variations
Easier
Shrink the field to 50 x 65 ft and hit a larger ball.
Standard
65 x 100 ft field, two tries, and a switch on every tag or catch.
Harder
Before tagging a runner, the ball must pass through two fielders.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student bats and a teammate runs for them; on defense, they are a fixed passer in the middle.
- Shy students: start as the tosser for their team's batter, a role with no running pressure.
- Fitness level: tired students can stay behind the home line for a few hits.
Learning goals
- Hit the ball toward open areas of the field.
- Dodge throws and choose when to run back to the city.
- React together as a team when roles switch.
Equipment for a class of 25
- soft bats: 2
- soft balls: 3
- cones: 12
Teacher tip
The sudden switch is the heart of the game, so walk through one round in slow motion so students see who chases whom. Insist on throwing at the legs.
