Korfball Two-Hand Distance Shot Zones
A technique progression for the korfball distance shot, a two-hand chest shot at a basket with no backboard. Groups of six shoot from three marked distances, first with no defense and then against a defender trying to create a defended shot.
How to play
- Four posts with a group of 6 at each. Use flat disc cones to mark three arcs: 8 ft (1 point), 13 ft (2 points), and 18 ft (3 points).
- Technique (3 min): feet shoulder-width apart, ball at the chest, bend the knees, then extend the arms with the wrists finishing toward the basket.
- Round 1 (5 min): open shots from the closest arc; a partner rebounds and passes to the next shooter in line.
- Round 2 (5 min): each shooter picks a distance; the group adds up its points in 3 minutes and shares its record.
- Round 3 (7 min): 1v1. The shooter receives a pass and shoots if open. If the defender arrives within arm's length with a hand up, the shooter must pass or fake and move away.
Rules
- The rebounder waits until the ball hits the ground or the post before moving under the basket.
- Nobody shoots while someone is under the basket.
- In round 3, the defender does not touch the ball or the shooter.
- Rotate shooter, passer, rebounder, and defender every 3 shots.
Variations
Easier
Use only two arcs and a lower basket; one-hand shots are allowed.
Standard
Three arcs with increasing points and passive defense in the final round.
Harder
The shooter must receive, pump fake, and move to a new arc before shooting against an active defender.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student shoots seated from the closest arc and their baskets are worth 3 points.
- Visual impairment: a partner taps the post to help aim and a brightly colored ball is used.
- Higher skill: a shot only scores if it goes in without touching the rim.
Learning goals
- Perform a two-hand shot that links the legs and arms.
- Choose a shooting distance based on personal skill and the defender's position.
- Tell the difference between an open shot and a defended shot under korfball rules.
Equipment for a class of 25
- korfball posts: 4
- basketballs: 8
- cones: 8
- flat disc cones: 24
Teacher tip
The usual error is shooting with the arms only, so cue the ball to leave the hands as the legs straighten. Set up groups so no rebound flies toward another post.
