Korfball Give-and-Go Shooting
A korfball drill where students practice the give-and-go: pass, cut to the basket, get the ball back, and shoot, plus the two-hand set shot and the running-in shot. It builds shooting without a backboard, getting open, and rebounding.
How to play
- Form groups of 6 per post (or per low hoop if you have no posts) and mark shooting spots at 2.5 and 4.5 yards from the basket with cones.
- Set shot (4 min): in pairs, one shoots two-handed from 2.5 yards and the other rebounds and returns the ball; 5 shots, then switch.
- Give-and-go (6 min): A passes to B standing near the post; A cuts toward the basket, gets the ball back, and shoots on the run; then A becomes the passer.
- Long shot (4 min): shoot from 4.5 yards after a pass; the student nearest the post grabs the rebound.
- Final contest (5 min): each group counts baskets in 2 minutes of give-and-go; a close shot is worth 1 and a long shot 2.
- Clean up and quickly discuss (1 min) when it was best to cut.
Rules
- No dribbling or running with the ball.
- Shoot only when no one is under the basket rebounding.
- Shoot from outside the 2.5-yard spot except on the running-in shot.
- Safety: no hanging on or leaning against the post.
Variations
Easier
Use a low basketball hoop or a large hoop and a light ball.
Standard
Give-and-go with a running shot and a long shot from 4.5 yards.
Harder
Add a passive defender who contests the shot with a raised arm.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student shoots from a wheelchair at a low hoop placed next to the post.
- Visual impairment: a partner taps the post before the shot to give direction.
- Advanced students: they must shoot within 2 seconds of the catch.
Learning goals
- Perform the two-hand set shot and the running-in shot.
- Use the give-and-go to get open.
- Rebound and keep the drill moving.
Equipment for a class of 25
- korfball posts: 4
- balls: 8
- cones: 16
Teacher tip
A korfball basket has no backboard, so shots need more arc; teach that from day one. Secure the posts in their bases before you start.
