Korfball Center-Post Rondo
Four attackers pass the ball around a korfball post inside a circle while two defenders try to stop the shot; a shot is only allowed when the shooter is open. It builds quick passing without dribbling, reading who is open, and shooting at a high basket.
How to play
- Place each korfball post in the center of a circle with a 20 ft radius marked with cones. Form groups of 6: 4 attackers spread around the edge of the circle and 2 defenders in pinnies inside.
- Shooting warm-up (3 min): each group takes turns shooting from 10 ft with a two-hand chest shot, aiming for the basket without touching the post.
- Keep-away (4 min): attackers pass the ball around the edge without dribbling and within 3 seconds. They may step into the circle to shoot only if their defender is not facing them within arm's length.
- Scoring: 1 point for every 5 passes in a row and 3 points for a basket. If a defender touches the ball, they switch places with the player who made the pass.
- After every shot, made or missed, the ball goes back to the edge of the circle and play continues.
- Timed rotation: every 2 minutes the defenders change, so everyone defends at least once. Play 4 turns and add up each student's points as an attacker.
Rules
- No dribbling or running with the ball in your hands.
- Defenders may not touch the attacker or grab the ball out of their hands.
- Shoot only when nobody is facing you within arm's length.
- Nobody hangs on or pushes the post.
Variations
Easier
Only one defender inside the circle, and one dribble is allowed.
Standard
Two defenders and the defended-shot rule.
Harder
Also, a basket only counts if the ball has gone through all four attackers.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a student using a wheelchair plays as a stationary attacker, and their defender must stay 3 ft away.
- Hearing impairment: agree on an open-hand gesture to ask for the ball.
- Lower skill: use a smaller circle, about 13 ft, so passes are short.
Learning goals
- Pass the ball quickly without dribbling to find an open teammate.
- Recognize when the conditions for a shot are met.
- Shoot at a high basket with a two-hand technique.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Korfball posts: 4
- soft balls: 4
- cones: 32
- pinnies: 8
Teacher tip
Remember that a korfball basket has no backboard and is hard to score on, so praise well-executed shots even when they miss. Explain a defended shot clearly with an example before you start.
