Kin-Ball Five-Second Catch-and-Serve Transition
A high-tempo Kin-Ball variation where the catching team has only five seconds to set up and serve, trying to catch opponents off balance. Students work on the catch-to-attack transition, quick positioning, and decision-making under time pressure.
How to play
- Make 6 teams of 4 in pinnies of three colors and set up two 20 x 20 m courts with three teams on each (2 min).
- Set-up drill: a team catches a ball tossed by the teacher and must form the serving position (three hold, one strikes) in under 5 seconds; 6 reps per team (5 min).
- Play with a 5-second rule counted out loud by the resting team on that court; running out of time is a fault (10 min).
- Scoring: a missed catch or fault gives 1 point to each of the other two teams; a serve made in under 3 seconds that no one catches is worth 2.
- Switch the counting team every 5 minutes; finish by reflecting: who calls the color and who strikes on your team? (3 min).
Rules
- Before striking, call 'Omnikin' and the color of the team being called.
- All four players touch the ball before the serve.
- If two players head to the same spot, they pull up; no head-first dives.
- The same team counts for 5 minutes, out loud and at a steady pace.
Variations
Easier
Allow 8 seconds to serve.
Standard
Five seconds to serve and double points for an uncaught quick serve.
Harder
Teams must rotate the striker on every serve in a fixed order.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student is always one of the holders and the team sets up around them.
- Hearing impairment: the counting team shows one finger for each second.
- Fitness level: teams may sub one player every minute with their extra player.
Learning goals
- Set up the serve quickly after a catch.
- Make calling and aiming decisions under time pressure.
- Assign team roles efficiently.
Equipment for a class of 25
- giant balls: 2
- colored pinnies: 25
- cones: 16
- stopwatches: 2
Teacher tip
Teams save time if they decide in advance who strikes; suggest a pre-set plan. Keep the two courts well apart so balls don't drift into the other game.
