Kin-Ball Call-and-Aim Strategy Game
A three-team kin-ball game focused on serving tactics: the serving team looks for gaps between opponents and chooses which team to call based on how they are positioned. Students learn to read the game, cover space on defense, and communicate quickly.
How to play
- Form 3 teams of 4 on the court (gray, black, and blue) plus 1-2 waiting teams that rotate in every 4 minutes; mark a 20 x 20-yard court.
- Review the basic rule (2 min): the serving team calls "Omnikin!" and a color; that team must catch the ball before it touches the floor.
- If the called team fails to catch it, the other two teams each score 1 point; if they catch it, they serve from that spot within 5 seconds.
- Tactics break (2 min): explain that it pays to call the worst-positioned team and aim at the space they leave open; each defender covers one corner of their area.
- Play 4 rounds of 4 minutes; after each round, the team with the fewest points rotates out and a waiting team comes in.
- After the second round, each team takes 1 minute to agree on a secret signal for choosing whom to call.
Rules
- All four players on the serving team must touch the ball to serve.
- The serve must go up or level and travel at least 6 feet.
- No blocking or pushing opponents.
- Safety: no diving to make a catch; holders keep their heads down during the hit.
Variations
Easier
The called team may let the ball bounce once.
Standard
Three teams, a mandatory call, and a 5-second serve.
Harder
Serve within 3 seconds, and the hitter cannot hit on two serves in a row.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student acts as a holder and makes the team's call.
- Visual impairment: teammates say their color and position out loud before each serve.
- Lower fitness: place the student on a team of 5 to cover less space.
Learning goals
- Choose which team to call based on opponents' positions.
- Cover defensive space as a coordinated unit.
- Respect turns and the rules of a three-team game.
Equipment for a class of 25
- giant ball: 1
- pinnies: 25
- cones: 8
Teacher tip
To make the tactics visible, freeze play now and then and ask which team was worst positioned. Use very different pinnie colors so calls are clear.
