Jump Shot Over a Foam Barrier
A jump shot progression: takeoff rhythm without a ball, then shooting, and finally clearing a pool noodle barrier that mimics the defenders' arms. Students work on the takeoff, getting height, and releasing at the top of the jump.
How to play
- Two lines, one per goal, at 12 meters. A cone marks the takeoff at 9 meters: right-handers jump off the left foot, lefties off the right.
- Phase 1 (4 minutes): three steps and jump straight up with the arm cocked, no ball, landing with bent knees.
- Phase 2 (5 minutes): the next student in line passes; the shooter catches on the move, takes off at the cone, and shoots before landing.
- Phase 3 (6 minutes): two partners hold a noodle at their head height, 1 yard in front of the cone, and shooters go over it. Holders rotate every two shots.
- Last 3 minutes: three shots each, and the group counts goals that clear the barrier without touching it.
Rules
- Always take off outside the 6-meter goal area and never land on the goalie.
- Wait until the previous shooter has cleared out before going.
- Safety: soft landings, and never shoot at the goalie's head.
Variations
Easier
No barrier, takeoff at 8 meters, and a smaller ball.
Standard
Jump shot over a noodle held at the partners' head height.
Harder
Holders raise the noodle with straight arms as the shooter jumps, like a block.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student shoots from a standstill over a barrier lowered to chest height.
- Shyness: practice phases 1 and 2 off to the side with a partner before joining the line.
- Fitness level: adjust the noodle height and allow one or two steps.
Learning goals
- Coordinate three steps with an opposite-foot takeoff.
- Release the shot at the top of the jump.
- Land safely to prevent injuries.
Equipment for a class of 25
- team handballs: 12
- pool noodles: 2
- cones: 4
- goals: 2
Teacher tip
Most students jump forward and shoot on the way down, so cue them to 'hang' for a moment with the arm cocked. Use pool noodles, not poles, so contact does not hurt.
