Jump Rope Trick Ladder
Working in pairs, students climb a ladder of eight jump rope tricks, from the basic bounce to the criss-cross and the double under, while a partner checks off each rung. Students build arm and leg coordination, cardio endurance, and independence in choosing their next challenge.
How to play
- Make pairs, each with two jump ropes and a ladder card: 1 basic bounce, 2 boxer step, 3 forward-backward scissors, 4 jumping jacks, 5 side swing and jump, 6 criss-cross, 7 running step in place, 8 double under (2 min).
- Rope sizing: standing on the middle of the rope, the handles should reach the armpits. Quickly demonstrate tricks 4, 6, and 8 (2 min).
- Work blocks: one partner jumps for 45 seconds while the other counts, then they switch. To move up a rung, a student must do 10 reps of the trick in a row (12 min).
- If a pair gets stuck, they ask the teacher for a cue or watch a pair that has passed that rung.
- Final challenge: in 30 seconds each student links the three highest tricks they have mastered, and the partner writes the rung reached on the card (4 min).
Rules
- A rung is passed with 10 reps in a row without stepping on the rope.
- Jump on the balls of your feet with low hops and slightly bent knees.
- Each pair keeps 10 feet of space around them so no one gets hit by a rope.
Variations
Easier
The ladder has only the first six rungs, and each is passed with 5 reps.
Standard
Work through the eight-trick ladder with 10 reps per rung.
Harder
Add the alternating cross-and-open, the double-under criss-cross, or link the rungs with no stops between tricks.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student can swing the rope at the side of the body with both handles in one hand, matching the rhythm of each trick.
- Visual impairment: the partner claps the rhythm, and the student jumps on a spot with a raised tape line for reference.
- Fitness level: students who tire alternate each block with 30 seconds of side swings without jumping.
Learning goals
- Coordinate rope turning with different footwork patterns.
- Choose a challenge that fits their level and progress independently.
- Sustain intense effort in intervals.
Equipment for a class of 25
- individual jump ropes: 26
- challenge cards: 13
Teacher tip
The typical mistake is turning from the shoulders: ask for elbows close to the body and wrists doing the work. For the double under, have them try a slightly higher jump with a slap on the thighs first.
