Javelin in Waves: Throw, Wait, Retrieve on the Signal
A javelin technique session organized in waves: one row throws at a time, everyone waits and retrieval happens on a signal. The whole class gets lots of throws and nobody is ever in the sector.
How to play
- Explain the three signals: one whistle 'throw', two whistles 'retrieve', long whistle 'everyone freeze' (3 min).
- Four lines behind the throwing line; only the first person in each is on the line. First wave from standing (6 min).
- Waves with three steps: after throwing, go to the back; the next wave retrieves when the teacher signals (8 min).
- One technique cue per wave: arm stretched back, hips forward, throw over the shoulder (6 min).
- On the last retrieval, each student marks their best throw of the day with a cone (5 min).
- Final pickup and discussion: which signal was hardest to respect? (2 min).
Rules
- Nobody crosses the throwing line until the retrieve signal.
- On the long whistle, everyone puts the javelin down and freezes.
- Retrieve at a walk, never running, and return along the side of the sector.
- Never throw a javelin back to the line.
Variations
Easier
Standing throw and a very short sector.
Standard
Three steps and normal sector.
Harder
Five steps with a crossover and distance cones.
Adaptations
- Deaf or hard of hearing: signals come with flags or teacher gestures.
- Visual impairment: throws with a partner beside them who confirms signals and guides retrieval.
- Low confidence: may throw in the last line of the group and choose the technique cue.
Learning goals
- Follow a safety routine in group throwing.
- Improve basic javelin technique.
- Wait your turn with self-control.
Equipment for a class of 25
- foam javelins: 8
- cones: 16
- whistle: 1
Teacher tip
Foam javelins are low risk, but this is where you build habits for real implements. If a javelin lands outside the sector, the teacher retrieves it.
