Inclusive-Pass Floorball: Goals Worth More With Every Passer
Coed floorball games where each goal is worth as many points as the number of different teammates who touched the ball during that possession, up to four. The rule rewards team play, takes the spotlight off the most skilled players and forces a choice between attacking fast or involving more teammates.
How to play
- Form four coed teams of five or six and review stick safety: nothing above the waist and no hitting an opponent's stick (4 min).
- Explain scoring: a solo goal is 1 point; with two different passers, 2; with three, 3; with four or more, 4. The attacking team counts passers out loud (2 min).
- First round of 8-minute games on two courts (8 min).
- Tactical timeout: each team discusses when to go for the quick 1-point goal and when to build the team goal (3 min).
- Second round of 8-minute games against new opponents (8 min).
- Wrap-up: compare how many 3- and 4-point goals there were in each round and who scored them (5 min).
Rules
- The stick never goes above the waist, whether shooting or receiving.
- No hitting, lifting or hooking an opponent's stick; play the ball only.
- No body contact, and no playing the ball while lying down or kneeling.
- If teams disagree on the number of passers, the goalie of the team scored on decides.
Variations
Easier
Play with bigger goals and no goalies.
Standard
Coed 5-on-5 floorball with goals worth more for each different passer.
Harder
A goal is only worth 4 points if the scorer hasn't scored yet in the game.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student plays in a wheelchair with a short stick and has a 6-foot protected zone where no one can pressure them.
- Visual impairment: use a bigger, brightly colored ball, and teammates call the student's name before passing.
- Low fitness level: the student can play goalie or come in for short two-minute shifts.
Learning goals
- Make tactical decisions based on a modified scoring rule.
- Encourage the whole team to take part in a coed sport.
- Follow floorball safety rules.
Equipment for a class of 25
- floorball sticks: 24
- floorballs: 4
- goals: 4
- pinnies: 12
Teacher tip
This rule balances coed games well without relying on gender quotas. If the floorball keeps getting away, use a slightly heavier foam ball.
