Human Chain Obstacle Course
Groups of five, linked by a rope nobody may let go of, race an obstacle course against the clock. Students practice group coordination, matching pace to the slowest member and communicating on the move.
How to play
- Set up a 6-obstacle course: cone zigzag, step over a bench, duck under a rope 3 feet high, two hoops held upright by cones, circle a cone carrying a ball between two students, and a final 10-yard sprint (3 min).
- Make 5 groups of 5. Each group takes a 20-foot rope and every member holds it with one hand; anyone letting go adds 5 seconds (2 min).
- First lap is a walk-through with no clock, slow and talking (3 min).
- Two timed laps per group, starting 30 seconds apart; record time plus penalties (6 min).
- Each group proposes and sets up a change to one obstacle and runs a final lap (4 min).
- Wrap-up: what role did the front and back students play (2 min).
Rules
- No one lets go of the rope during the course.
- If an obstacle is knocked over, the group resets it before moving on.
- Groups may pass each other only on the final sprint.
- Safety: walk over the bench; never jump with the rope pulled tight.
Variations
Easier
Groups of 3, without the ball obstacle.
Standard
Groups of 5, six obstacles and a penalty for letting go.
Harder
The front student keeps eyes closed and the back student guides by voice.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: replace the bench and low rope with slalom cones and have the group adjust its pace.
- Visual impairment: the student holds the middle of the rope and teammates call out each obstacle ahead of time.
- Lower fitness: the final sprint may be a brisk walk with no penalty.
Learning goals
- Coordinate movement with the rest of the group.
- Match one's own pace to teammates' abilities.
- Suggest creative improvements to a course.

Teacher tip
Put the student who struggles most in the middle of the rope, not at the end. Make sure the low rope is tied securely so it can't fall on anyone.
