Heart Health Escape Room: Four-Digit Lock
Each group must open a box closed with a four-digit combination lock. Every digit is earned by completing a fitness challenge in which the whole group reaches a target heart rate and then answering a health question.
How to play
- Make 5 groups of 5, each with its locked box. Set up 4 stations with cones about 15 yards apart, each with an envelope of challenge cards (2 min).
- At each station the group completes the task (for example, 90 seconds of alternating jumps) and everyone takes a 10-second pulse at the wrist (explanation, 3 min).
- If everyone is above 24 beats, they open the question; the answer gives a digit ("recommended daily minutes of activity: use the tens digit").
- Groups start at different stations and rotate clockwise every 4 minutes on the whistle (16 min).
- With all four digits, they try the lock; if it fails, they complete an extra 30-second challenge before trying again.
- Debrief: which question was hardest and how the group made sure no one was left behind (4 min).
Rules
- A challenge only counts if the whole group does it.
- Take pulses with two fingers, never the thumb.
- No peeking at other stations' or groups' envelopes.
- Safety: jog between stations and don't cut through working groups.
Variations
Easier
Lower the target to 20 beats and give the questions three answer choices.
Standard
Four stations with a target of 24 beats in 10 seconds and open questions.
Harder
A fifth station holds a riddle that reveals the real order of the digits.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student does an arm-based or seated version and checks the group's pulses.
- Shyness or autism: give each member a set role (reader, timer, lock keeper).
- Lower fitness: the student reaches the target with a personal effort level, without comparing.
Learning goals
- Cooperate toward a shared goal by dividing up roles.
- Take a pulse and connect it to exercise intensity.
- Apply health knowledge to solve puzzles.
Equipment for a class of 25
- combination locks: 5
- boxes: 5
- challenge cards: 20
- cones: 8
- stopwatch: 1
Teacher tip
Set the combinations ahead of time and keep them on a master card. If a group gets stuck, trade a hint for an extra challenge, never the digit itself.
