Handball: Three-Wave Fast Break After a Save
After a goalkeeper save, the team launches an organized fast break in three waves: wings in the first wave, center and backs in the second and the rest in the third. Time to the shot is measured, aiming to finish in under eight seconds.
How to play
- Explain the waves: first, the wings down the sidelines; second, center and backs; third, pivot and trailing defenders (3 min).
- No defense: the goalkeeper saves a ball thrown by the teacher and throws long to a wing on the run; 1v0 shot (5 min).
- First wave with one recovering defender: 2v1 at full speed (5 min).
- Second wave: if the first wave can't shoot, play 3v2 with the trailers (6 min).
- 6v6 game where a fast-break goal in under 8 seconds counts double; one student keeps time (6 min).
Rules
- The goalkeeper throws long only if the receiver has raised a hand.
- No tackling or pushing a running player from behind.
- Breaks go down the sidelines to avoid collisions in the middle.
- After each wave there are at least 30 seconds of walking recovery.
Variations
Easier
No recovering defenders and a middle pass to the center back.
Standard
Wave-based fast break with recovering defenders and an 8-second limit.
Harder
The team that loses the ball sends two extra defenders back right away.
Adaptations
- Wheelchair user: plays goalkeeper starting the break or receives in the second wave in a clear lane.
- Hearing impairment: the start is signaled by the goalkeeper raising a flag.
- Low fitness level: always plays in the third wave and in the half-court attack.
Learning goals
- Organize the defense-to-offense transition in successive waves.
- Make quick decisions in numerical advantage situations.
- Manage the intensity of short efforts with proper recovery.

Teacher tip
Ask the wings to leave as soon as they see the goalkeeper will catch the ball, not afterward. Watch recovery time so quality does not drop.
