Handball: Set Shot with High Arm and Hip Drive
A technical progression for the handball set shot: high arm cocking, opposite foot forward and energy transfer from hip to shoulder. In pairs, one student shoots while the other observes with a checklist and records video for feedback.
How to play
- Explain the three key points: opposite foot forward, elbow above the shoulder and hips rotating before the arm; demo it in slow motion (4 min).
- In pairs 8 m apart, throw to your partner without a run-up, focusing only on arm cocking and trunk rotation (4 min).
- Add three approach steps and shoot at the goal from 9 m, aiming at hoops hanging in the corners (6 min).
- The observer records three shots and checks off on the sheet whether all three key points are met (5 min).
- Each pair reviews the video, picks one point to improve and repeats five shots focused on it (6 min).
Rules
- Nobody stands in or behind the goal while others are shooting.
- Shoot only on the signal from the teacher or the observer.
- All balls are collected at the same time, never during a round.
- Before shooting hard, take at least ten easy throws to warm up the shoulder.
Variations
Easier
Shoot from 7 m with a smaller ball and no run-up.
Standard
Set shot with three approach steps from 9 m, aiming at the corner hoops.
Harder
A passive defender with arms up forces the shooter to throw over or around them.
Adaptations
- Wheelchair user: shoots from the chair, working only on trunk rotation and the high arm.
- Hearing impairment: key points are shown on a picture card and the shooting signal is visual.
- Shoulder injury: acts as observer and video analyst for the whole task.
Learning goals
- Perform the set shot with a correct hip, trunk and arm sequence.
- Analyze one's own technique using video and a checklist.
- Prevent shoulder injuries with a progressive throwing warm-up.
Equipment for a class of 25
- handballs: 15
- cones: 8
- hoops: 4
- tablets or phones: 6
Teacher tip
Stress that the hips turn before the arm: it is the most common mistake. If there is no goal, hang the hoops from a fence or net about 6 feet high.
