Goalie Outlet Fast Break with a Chaser
The goalie fires a long outlet pass to a wing who breaks on the fast break, catches at full speed, and must score before a chaser catches up. Students practice the long pass, catching at top speed, and finishing under pressure.
How to play
- Two lines at the corners of one goal, by the sidelines; the goalie has a pile of balls. A second goalie waits at the far goal.
- On the whistle, the first student sprints up the sideline; the goalie throws a long outlet pass, and the runner catches without stopping and shoots at the far goal.
- Phase 2: the first student in the other line starts as a chaser 3 yards behind and, if they catch up before the 9-meter line, may only contest the shot with their arms.
- Goal before the chaser arrives, 2 points; goal with the chaser on them, 1. Both return along the sideline and switch lines.
- Change goalies every 3 minutes and alternate sides so everyone runs both the left and right wing.
Rules
- The chaser may not push, hold, or cut in front of the runner.
- Three steps max after the catch; dribbling is allowed.
- Safety: go only on the signal and always return along the sideline, never through the middle.
Variations
Easier
No chaser, and the goalie throws a medium-length pass.
Standard
Long goalie outlet with a chaser starting 3 yards back.
Harder
The chaser starts only 1 yard back and a defender waits at 9 meters, so the runner must fake.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student plays goalie and starts the break, choosing when to throw.
- Hearing impairment: signal the start by dropping an arm as well as blowing the whistle.
- Fitness level: adjust the chaser's head start to match each pair's speed.
Learning goals
- Catch a long pass on the run without slowing down.
- Finish the fast break with a chaser applying pressure.
- Throw an accurate outlet pass from the goal.
Equipment for a class of 25
- team handballs: 10
- cones: 6
- goals: 2
Teacher tip
The most common mistake is looking back too soon and slowing down; have runners turn their head only after a few strides. Remind goalies to lead the runner.
