Free Ball Waves
Groups of three or four come onto the court in waves and receive free balls from the teacher that they must turn into a full three-touch play: pass, set, and send. Students practice court organization and a quick transition to attack.
How to play
- Split the class into groups of 4 and assign each a color. The first group steps onto the court while the rest line up behind the end line (2 min).
- From the other side, the teacher sends a free ball over the net; the group must pass, set, and send it over.
- Each group gets three balls in a row, then jogs off the sideline as the next group comes in (a wave).
- Scoring: 1 point for a three-touch play that clears the net, 2 if the last touch is an attack that lands in the deep zone marked with cones.
- After 12 minutes, total the group scores; in the last 4 minutes, the winning group picks the difficulty of the ball for the others.
Rules
- The incoming group waits until the previous group is fully off the court.
- The three touches must be made by three different players.
- Always exit along the sideline so you do not cross the incoming group.
Variations
Easier
The free ball is tossed by hand, and a catch is allowed on the second touch.
Standard
Three balls per wave with a required three-touch play.
Harder
The third ball of each wave is a controlled attack from the teacher instead of a free ball.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: stay at the setter spot by the net without jogging in and out.
- Autism: a card with the group order and a fixed spot in the waiting line.
- Lower fitness: walk briskly on and off instead of jogging.
Learning goals
- Build a three-touch play off a free ball.
- Organize on the court quickly and without collisions.
- Value group play over individual highlights.
Equipment for a class of 25
- volleyballs: 15
- net: 1
- cones: 8
Teacher tip
Send similar balls at first so groups can get organized, then raise the difficulty once they succeed. If you have two courts, have an advanced student feed balls on the second one.
