Foam Javelin with Judges: Sector, Tip and Arc
A foam javelin competition with adapted rules: a throw counts only if it lands inside the sector, hits tip first and the thrower doesn't step over the arc. Students take turns as throwers and judges and learn to call and explain a foul.
How to play
- Explain the three conditions for a legal throw and the pinny signals: white, legal; red, foul (3 min).
- Set up three sectors with a rope on the ground as the throwing arc and cones every 5 m along the sector lines (4 min).
- Groups of eight: three throwers, arc judge, landing judge, measurer, recorder and sector marshal (2 min).
- Rounds of three attempts per thrower; once all three have thrown, rotate roles (12 min).
- Review the scoresheet: percentage of fouls by cause and one technique change to reduce them (4 min).
Rules
- Nobody enters the sector until the landing judge gives a clear go-ahead.
- The thrower leaves the arc from behind, walking.
- The judge's call stands: students may ask for an explanation but not argue.
- Javelins are carried back by hand, never thrown back.
Variations
Easier
Judge only the sector and the arc, without requiring a tip-first landing.
Standard
Three legal-throw conditions with rotating judges and a scoresheet.
Harder
Add the rule that throwers may not turn their back to the field until the javelin lands.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: throws from a locked wheelchair behind the arc and also serves as head judge.
- Visual impairment: a partner orients them to the center of the sector and the judge announces the result out loud.
- Autism: starts as the recorder, a role that always follows the same format.
Learning goals
- Learn and apply the basic rules of the javelin throw.
- Judge fairly and communicate calls clearly.
- Improve throwing direction and tip-first landings.
Equipment for a class of 25
- foam javelins: 9
- cones: 24
- ropes: 3
- pinnies: 6
- worksheets: 3
Teacher tip
A sector of about 30 degrees is enough; four cones per line mark it clearly. Make sure the landing judge never stands in the flight path.
