Foam Javelin Golf Course
A golf course across the field where each hole is a hoop on the ground and students move forward by throwing a foam javelin from wherever the last throw landed. Students work on the grip, keeping the arm in line with the javelin, and controlling distance.
How to play
- Set up 8 holes beforehand (a hoop plus a cone) 15–25 yards apart, each with a numbered tee cone.
- Groups of 3, one javelin per student; each group starts on a different hole so everyone plays at the same time (2 min to explain).
- Taking turns, each student throws from the tee; the next throw is taken with the front foot on the spot where the tip landed.
- A hole is finished when the javelin touches the hoop on landing; the group records each student's throws on a scorecard.
- Groups move to the next hole when done; allow about 2 min per hole and play at least 8 holes (about 18 min).
- Wrap-up (2 min): each group shares which distance was hardest to control.
Rules
- Only the student whose turn it is throws; the others wait behind the thrower, never in front.
- Javelins are retrieved only after all three have thrown and no one else is aiming that way.
- Every throw is overhand with the tip forward: no sidearm or dragging throws.
- Fewest total throws wins, and the group with the most accurate scorecard also earns a point.
Variations
Easier
Replace the hoops with 6-ft zones marked by four cones and shorten the holes to 10–15 yards.
Standard
A hole is finished when the javelin touches the hoop, with holes 15–25 yards long.
Harder
Add obstacles (a rope between two posts to throw over) and require a 3-step approach on every throw.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student throws seated or standing in place, and a hole counts when the javelin lands within 3 ft of the hoop.
- Visual impairment: a partner guides the student to the throwing spot and claps from the hole to give direction.
- Lower strength: the student throws from a tee cone moved 5 yards closer on every hole.
Learning goals
- Adjust throwing force to the distance of the target.
- Keep a high elbow with the tip lined up with the throwing direction.
- Follow turn-taking and safety rules in a shared space.
Equipment for a class of 25
- foam javelins: 25
- hoops: 8
- cones: 16
Teacher tip
Lay the holes out in a fan so no group ever throws toward another, and walk the course before class. If a student throws too flat, have them aim at a point high above the hoop.
