Foam Javelin Bocce
A target game that combines foam javelins with bocce rules: a hoop is placed as the target and the team whose javelin lands closest scores. Students practice throwing point first, controlling force, and making fair decisions.
How to play
- Form groups of 4 (two rival pairs) with 4 foam javelins in two colors and one hoop per group; space the groups 5 m apart side by side (2 min).
- Demo: grip in the middle, javelin by the ear with the tip slightly up, and full arm extension at release (2 min).
- One pair places the hoop on the ground 6 to 12 m from the throwing line; players alternate throws between pairs until all 4 javelins are out (2 min practice).
- When all javelins are down, the group walks out: the pair whose javelin tip is closest to the hoop scores 1 point for each of its javelins closer than the best rival one; inside the hoop counts double (8 min of games).
- The winning pair places the hoop for the next end; switch opponents every 4 minutes, rotating clockwise (4 min).
- Collect equipment and total up every pair's points (2 min).
Rules
- Throw only when the whole group is behind the line and nobody is in the area.
- Walk to collect the javelins and carry them tip down.
- Measure from the tip of the javelin, not the tail.
- If it is unclear which is closer, measure heel to toe and both pairs decide together.
Variations
Easier
Place the hoop 4–6 m away and allow a two-handed overhead throw.
Standard
Hoop between 6 and 12 m, one-handed throw, four javelins per group.
Harder
Add a cone in front of the hoop that must not be hit, or throw after a three-step approach.
Adaptations
- Students with limited mobility: throw seated on a bench, with the hoop at a distance agreed on with their partner.
- Autism or shyness: keep the same group of 4 for the whole lesson and post a card with the turn order.
- Fitness or skill level: skilled throwers use a line 2 m farther back; beginners may throw from 2 m closer.
Learning goals
- Throw a foam javelin point first.
- Control throwing force based on the distance to the target.
- Decide the result of each end fairly.
Equipment for a class of 25
- foam javelins: 24
- hoops: 6
- cones: 12
Teacher tip
Watch for sidearm throws; if the javelin lands tail first, the grip is too far back. Line all groups up facing the same direction so nobody throws toward another group.
