Foam Javelin Alley: Throw It Straight
A foam javelin event where the winner is not the one who throws farthest but the one who lands the javelin inside an alley marked by two ropes that narrows as it goes. Students work on throwing direction, lining the arm up with the target, and consistency.
How to play
- Lay out 4 alleys with two ropes each: 2 m wide at the start and 1 m wide at the far end, 15 m away; mark three sections worth 1, 2, and 3 points with cones (4 min).
- Demo: shoulder and hip facing the alley, arm stretched back with the javelin at head height, and throw "over the rail" by pulling the elbow through (2 min).
- Groups of 6 per alley with 3 javelins: students take turns throwing while a teammate records where the tip lands; outside the alley scores 0 (6 min).
- After every three throws in the group, everyone walks out together to collect the javelins and walks back outside the ropes (part of the round).
- Record round: each student throws twice and the group adds up the points; play it twice, switching alleys to compare (6 min).
- Share out: where were you looking when you let go? (2 min).
Rules
- Throw only when the alley is empty and the teacher gives the signal.
- Walk to collect the javelins and carry them tip down.
- All alleys face the same direction and are 3 m apart.
- Score where the tip lands, even if the javelin rolls afterward.
Variations
Easier
Make the alley 3 m wide the whole way and move the start 1 m closer.
Standard
Use a 2 m alley that narrows to 1 m at the end, with three scoring sections.
Harder
Throw after a three-step approach, or narrow the far end to 50 cm.
Adaptations
- Students with limited mobility: throw seated with the alley starting closer, scoring the same points.
- Students with visual impairments: a partner claps at the end of the alley to give direction and reports the result.
- Fitness or skill level: skilled throwers use a three-step approach; beginners may throw from a standstill with their feet lined up with the alley.
Learning goals
- Point the shoulders and hips in the direction of the throw.
- Throw the javelin in a straight line by pulling the elbow through.
- Value accuracy as much as distance.
Equipment for a class of 25
- foam javelins: 12
- ropes: 8
- cones: 12
Teacher tip
The common mistake is swinging the arm across the body so the javelin veers off to one side; ask students to finish with the hand pointing down the alley.
