Flying Disc through Hanging Hoops

Students throw a flying disc backhand, trying to send it through hoops hanging from a rope at different heights and distances, like the accuracy events in disc sports. It builds backhand technique, aiming, and personal improvement.

How to play

  1. String a long rope between two posts or goals at about 6.5 ft high and tie 4 hoops to it at different heights, about 6 ft apart.
  2. Use cones to mark three throwing lines at 13, 20, and 26 ft from the hoops. Form 4 groups, one in front of each hoop, with 3 discs per group.
  3. Review the backhand (2 min): stand sideways to the target, keep the disc flat, bring the arm across the chest, and release with a snap of the wrist toward the hoop.
  4. Round 1 (4 min): each student throws 3 discs from 13 ft. Going through the hoop is worth 3 points and touching it is worth 1. The next student in line collects the discs once the group has thrown.
  5. Round 2 (4 min): each student chooses a line; points are multiplied by 1, 2, or 3 depending on distance. Each student keeps a running total or posts it on the whiteboard.
  6. Round 3 (4 min): groups rotate to the next hoop, which hangs at a different height, and each student tries to beat their round 2 score.

Variations

Teacher tip

Check the hoop knots carefully and keep the collection area clear. The most common error is releasing the disc tilted; ask students to finish with the throwing arm pointing at the hoop.
