Floorball: Receive with Back to Goal, Turn and Shoot
The forward receives with their back to the goal and a defender behind, and must turn and shoot within a few seconds. Students practice turning to the stick side and turning to the backhand side, and reading where the defender is coming from.
How to play
- Explain both turns: to the stick side with the ball shielded, and to the opposite side dragging the ball across the front of the body (3 min).
- Groups of seven per goal: a passer at 10 m, the forward 6 m from goal with their back to it, and the rest in line; turn and shoot without defense, alternating sides (5 min).
- Passive defender right behind the forward: the forward feels which side the defender is on and turns the other way (5 min).
- Active defender and a 4-second limit from receiving to shooting; shoot at an empty goal or at a protected goalie if the group has already done the goalie lesson (8 min).
- Each group records how many shots on goal they got with each turn and discusses it with the teacher (4 min).
Rules
- The defender may not push or hold the forward, only play the ball with the stick.
- If there is a goalie, they must wear a caged helmet and knee pads, and shots must stay below the goalie's waist.
- Stick below the waist when turning and shooting.
- The line waits outside the shooting area, to one side of the passer.
Variations
Easier
No defender and always turning to the stick side.
Standard
Active defender, 4-second limit and two kinds of turns.
Harder
The passer chooses between passing to the forward with back to goal or to a second forward cutting in from the side.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: acts as passer, or receives facing forward with a chair turn instead of turning from back to goal.
- Visual impairment: no defender and a verbal cue from the passer; shoot at a goal with a sound marker behind it.
- Autism: always in the same spot in the line and no time limit in the first round.
Learning goals
- Turn with the ball quickly and while shielding it.
- Read the defender's position through contact and sight.
- Finish in little time and space.

Teacher tip
In floorball many goals come from turns near the crease; remind students the forward may not step into the goalie's area. If some students never turn to the backhand side, ask for two turns that way before going back to their comfortable side.
