Floorball Penalty Shot Shootout
A hockey-style floorball penalty shootout: the shooter starts at center carrying the ball, never stopping, and must beat the goalie with a deke or a shot. Students work on stickhandling at speed, faking, and staying composed under pressure.
How to play
- Place two goals at the ends of a 30 x 15 m (about 100 x 50 ft) court and mark a starting cone 15 m from each goal; form four teams of six in pinnies, two per goal.
- Explain the penalty rule: the ball starts at the cone, the shooter keeps moving forward without stopping or backing up, and gets one shot; if the ball stops, the attempt ends.
- Practice round, 4 minutes: each shooter tries three moves: a straight shot, a deke to one side with a blade switch, and a forehand-to-backhand move before shooting.
- Official shootout, 10 minutes: teams shoot in alternating turns and the opponent provides a goalie, who rotates each attempt. A goal is worth 1 point; each team takes 5 shots, with sudden death if tied.
- Before each attempt, the shooter tells a teammate which move they will use; scoring with that move earns an extra planning point.
Rules
- The goalie plays on their knees with no stick, using the hands, and cannot come out more than 2 m (6 ft) from the goal line.
- The shooter may not raise the stick above the waist when shooting.
- Waiting players stand behind the starting line, never beside the goal.
Variations
Easier
The shooter may stop once before shooting and starts from 10 m.
Standard
Moving penalty shot from 15 m with one shot and a bonus point for following the plan.
Harder
The shooter has 5 seconds to finish the attempt and a goal off a deke counts double.
Adaptations
- A student who uses a wheelchair can shoot from 8 m with an adapted stick and a slightly larger ball.
- For shy students, let their team announce the move and let them shoot early in the order.
- For less skilled students, make the goal smaller with cones or have the goalie play seated.
Learning goals
- Carry the ball at speed while keeping control.
- Execute a deke to throw the goalie off balance.
- Manage pressure in high-stakes moments.
