Floorball Free-Hit Set Plays
Teams design and rehearse two free-hit set plays near the opponent's crease and then use them in a game. Students practice group tactical planning, passing accuracy, and organized defense at the required distance.
How to play
- Make 4 teams of 6 on two 30 x 15 m courts; remind students that on a free hit defenders stand 3 m (10 ft) from the ball (2 min).
- Each team sketches two plays on a whiteboard for a free hit 5 m outside the crease, such as a drop pass and shot or a pass across to the back post (4 min).
- Walk-through with no defense: run each play 4 times from different cones with your own goalie (5 min).
- Live reps: one team attacks and the other defends with a two-player wall and a goalie; switch roles every 5 tries (5 min).
- 5-minute game: every foul in your own half gives the other team a free hit, where they must run a play; a set-play goal is worth 2. Finish by picking the most effective play (6 min).
Rules
- Sticks never go above the waist, on the swing or the follow-through.
- No hitting sticks, body-checking, or playing the ball above the knee.
- The wall stays 3 m away and holds until the ball is played.
- Goalies play without a stick and never lie down in front of shooters.
Variations
Easier
Defenders set up 5 m away with a one-player wall.
Standard
Defense at 3 m, a two-player wall, and double points for set-play goals.
Harder
The shooter must play within 5 seconds and the defense breaks as soon as the ball is touched.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: take free hits from a fixed spot or call the play from the sideline.
- Hearing impairment: the play starts when the shooter raises the stick, not just on the whistle.
- Fitness level: students needing a lighter load play goalie or in the wall.
Learning goals
- Plan simple dead-ball plays as a team.
- Respect the defensive distance and stick safety.
- Evaluate a play's effectiveness and suggest improvements.

Teacher tip
Students tend to design plays with too many passes; cap them at two or three touches. Check every stick before starting.
