Floorball Cup: Pool Play, Crossover Games, and Tiebreakers
A complete floorball tournament in one class: two pools of three teams with round robin play, standings with tiebreakers, then semifinal and final crossover games. The team sitting out referees and keeps the table, building tournament organization and team play.
How to play
- Make 6 teams of 4 (one of 5 with subs) and draw two pools of three. Explain points and tiebreakers: 3 for a win, 1 for a tie; if tied, head-to-head first, then goal difference, goals scored and finally a one-on-one shootout (3 min).
- Pool play on two courts: three 4-minute rounds; in each pool, the team sitting out referees and posts the score on the whiteboard (13 min).
- Standings: each pool works out its table and applies the tiebreakers out loud for the teacher (2 min).
- Crossovers: semifinals 1A vs. 2B and 1B vs. 2A, 5 minutes; third-place teams play for fifth, self-officiated (5 min).
- Final and third-place games at the same time, 5 minutes; fifth- and sixth-place teams referee (5 min).
- Closing: applause for every team and recognition for the best officiating (2 min).
Rules
- Stick always below the waist, including on shots.
- No hitting, lifting or hooking an opponent's stick.
- No playing the ball with the foot twice in a row or with the hand.
- Safety: no fixed goalies; nobody lies down or blocks on the floor.
Variations
Easier
Pool play only, ranked by points.
Standard
Pools, tiebreakers and full crossover games.
Harder
Add a scoring rule: a goal after three straight passes counts double and goes into goal difference.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: plays with a stick and a 2 m (6 ft) pressure-free zone, or runs the central tournament table.
- Autism or need for predictability: a printed bracket with times so they always know what comes next.
- Advanced players: may only score on the backhand or off a teammate's pass.
Learning goals
- Organize a tournament with pool play and elimination games.
- Apply tiebreak criteria correctly.
- Work together on offense and defense in a stick sport.
