Floorball: Controlled Slap Pass with a Short Backswing
Students learn the floorball slap pass, faster than the push pass, with a stick path that never rises above the waist before or after contact. They film themselves in slow motion to check stick height and pass direction.
How to play
- Explain the controlled slap: ball level with the front foot, short backswing below the waist, crisp contact and a low finish pointing at the teammate (3 min).
- In pairs 6 m apart, push passes as a baseline and then slap passes at the same distance (4 min).
- Groups of four: two pass, one receives and one films three slaps by each passer in slow motion from the side (5 min).
- Video review: mark the highest stick point on the image and check whether the finish points at the receiver; each passer picks one fix (4 min).
- Slap passes over 10 m through 1-meter cone gates applying the fix; count hits out of 10 tries (4 min).
Rules
- The stick does not go above the waist on the backswing or the follow-through; if it does, the pass does not count.
- Nobody stands within 10 feet behind or beside the student hitting.
- The ball is always hit toward the receiver's area, never toward another group.
- The student filming stands to the side at a safe distance.
Variations
Easier
Slap pass over 5 m without filming, with only a partner observing.
Standard
Controlled slap pass with slow-motion filming and 10-meter passes.
Harder
The receiver is moving and the pass must reach them without breaking stride.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: performs the slap from the wheelchair with a short stick, or films and analyzes using the worksheet.
- Hearing impairment: the receiver signals when to hit by raising the stick.
- Autism: gets a three-step picture template for reviewing the video.
Learning goals
- Perform a powerful, controlled slap pass below the waist.
- Analyze their own technique on video and choose a specific improvement.
- Apply stick safety rules to a faster skill.
Equipment for a class of 25
- floorball sticks: 28
- floorball balls: 14
- cones: 20
- tablets or phones: 7
Teacher tip
This is the skill where most high sticks show up; the rule that the pass does not count fixes it faster than any explanation. Check that the tablets are set to slow motion before starting.
