Floorball: Clean Steals with a Legal Ball Tackle
Students practice how to win the ball in floorball without committing the most common stick fouls: hitting, lifting, hooking or blocking the opponent's stick. An observer with a worksheet classifies each attempt as a clean steal, a clean miss or a foul.
How to play
- Show the four stick fouls in slow motion with a student, then the legal tackle: come in from the side, blade low, touch only the ball and on the side away from the opponent's body (4 min).
- Groups of three: an attacker dribbling slowly along a 10-meter lane, a defender tackling from the side and an observer recording on the worksheet; 5 tries and rotate (6 min).
- 1v1 in 6 x 6 m squares for 30 seconds: the defender scores 2 for a clean steal and loses 1 for a foul; the observer decides (6 min).
- Each group totals its worksheet data and discusses which foul they repeat most and in what situation (4 min).
Rules
- Hitting, lifting, hooking or holding the opponent's stick is a foul and gets recorded.
- Do not play the ball between the opponent's legs or push them with the body.
- Stick below the waist before, during and after the tackle.
- The observer's call is respected; it can be reviewed with the teacher at the end.
Variations
Easier
The attacker walks and the defender only tries to touch the ball, not keep it.
Standard
Side tackle in a lane and 1v1 with plus and minus points.
Harder
The attacker may use dekes, and the defender must wait for the right moment without lunging.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: plays a slow-dribbling attacker or the observer with the worksheet.
- Visual impairment: practices the tackle against an attacker using a bell ball who calls out when approaching.
- Autism: the observer worksheet uses drawings of each foul to make classifying easier.
Learning goals
- Win the ball with a legal tackle.
- Identify the most common floorball stick fouls.
- Accept the observer's decision and correct their own behavior.

Teacher tip
The key test is touching the ball before the stick; when in doubt, it is a foul. The worksheet also gives you evidence for assessing fair play.
