Floorball Breakout from the Goalie
The floorball goalie, who plays without a stick, starts the attack with a hand pass, and three teammates must break the ball out of their zone against two forecheckers. Students work on passing, spreading wide, and decisions under pressure.
How to play
- Split the gym into four 20 x 10 m zones with a goal at one end and a 3 m cone gate at the other; groups of 6: a goalie, three breakout players, and two forecheckers (3 min).
- On the whistle, the goalie has five seconds to roll the ball by hand to a teammate open on a wing or in the middle.
- The breakout scores a point by getting through the gate in under fifteen seconds; forecheckers start 5 m out, and a goal off a steal is worth two.
- Rotate roles every three tries until everyone has played every role (12 min).
- Last 5 minutes: 3-on-3 with a goalie in each zone, and every goalie restart is a hand pass.
Rules
- Sticks never come above the waist.
- No hitting an opponent's stick, and only one kick in a row.
- The goalie stays in the crease and plays with hands or body.
- Safety: block shots standing up, never dropping to the floor, and no hard shots within 3 m of the goalie.
Variations
Easier
Only one forechecker and twenty seconds.
Standard
Three breakout players against two forecheckers with fifteen seconds.
Harder
Play 3-on-3, and the ball must touch both wings before the gate.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: goalie with a narrower goal, or stationary receiver at the gate.
- Autism or shyness: same group and same rotation order all class.
- Lower skill level: two pressure-free seconds after receiving.
Learning goals
- Start the attack from the goalie with a safe pass.
- Spread to the wings and middle to open passing lanes.
- Choose between stickhandling and passing under pressure.
Equipment for a class of 25
- floorball sticks: 24
- floorball balls: 8
- small goals: 4
- cones: 16
- pinnies: 12
Teacher tip
Breakout players tend to crowd the goalie: mark the wide spots with cones. Repeat the waist-high stick rule at every rotation.
