Floorball: Blocking Passing Lanes with the Blade Down
A defensive drill for cutting off passes without going after the player: the defender places the blade on the floor in the passing lane and shifts with the ball. First in a lane with two defenders, then in a game where every blocked pass scores.
How to play
- Explain the stance: knees bent, blade on the floor toward the passing side, and eyes on the ball and the likely receiver (2 min).
- 12 x 6 m lanes split into three strips: two groups of three attackers at the ends pass the ball through the middle strip, where two defenders may only block with the blade on the floor (5 min).
- Defenders coordinate: one covers the direct lane and the other the side pass; count blocked passes in 1 minute and rotate (5 min).
- 4v4 game in which every blocked pass counts as half a goal for the defending team (6 min).
- Each team says which passer was easiest to block and why, looking for cues like eye direction or stick position (2 min).
Rules
- Blocks are made with the blade on the floor; lifting the stick to intercept in the air is a foul.
- In the lane, the defender cannot leave the middle strip or attack the ball carrier.
- Do not hit the passer's stick or stick a foot out in a way that could trip someone.
- Stick below the waist at all times.
Variations
Easier
A single defender and slow push passes.
Standard
Two coordinated defenders and a game with a reward for blocks.
Harder
Attackers may lift the ball slightly below knee height, and defenders must block legally with the body.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: defends in the middle strip from the wheelchair, with a narrower strip.
- Hearing impairment: the start and role changes are signaled with a raised pinnie.
- Autism: always in the same lane with the same defensive partner.
Learning goals
- Position the stick to cut off passing lanes.
- Anticipate the pass by reading the passer's eyes and stance.
- Coordinate defense with a teammate.
Equipment for a class of 25
- floorball sticks: 28
- floorball balls: 8
- cones: 24
- pinnies: 12
Teacher tip
This drill teaches defending without fouls: blocking beats going for the stick. Remind students that blocking with the foot is allowed, but a dangerous kick to clear is not.
